More than half of motorists speed on Sunnyhill

More than half of all vehicles tracked in a recent survey on the Sunnyhill Road exceeded the 50km/h speed limit where the monitoring took place, writes Brian Byrne.

Just over 9,000 vehicle movements were registered by the Kildare County Council survey in the period between 27 February and 2 March, and more than 4,500 of them were travelling above the limit, close to the entrance to Cnoc Na Greine.

Four in 10 of the movements were driving between 50-60km/h, while one in 10 (904 vehicles) were moving between 60-80km/h. Ten vehicles were going in excess of 80km/h, and one driver was clocked at 129km/h in the 50km/h zone.

Just 3 percent of vehicles were registered as HGVs, compared to the 8 percent in a similar survey last October. The other results are broadly in line with the October survey, which was taken closer to the motorway bridge and mistakenly presented as being in the 60km/h limit and gave an erroneous picture of the actual situation.
