Kilcullen third in county in TT category
Kilcullen came third in its category in Co Kildare in the 2011 Tidy Towns Competition with 268 marks, behind Kill (295) and Clane (269), writes Brian Byrne. The results of the competition, which is sponsored by Supervalu, were announced this morning. The score, out of a possible 400, was 2 points of an improvement over 2010.
Kilcullen gained a point each in the categories of Built Environment, Landscaping, and Roads, Streets & Back Areas, but lost a point on Litter Control. The judges noted that the 200 window boxes 'bring much colour to Kilcullen and make a major contribution to the overall attraction of the town'. They also commented favourably on the Valley Park, the Dun Ailinne heritage park, and the prospect of how the town will look when the new railings replace the convent wall.
They also said that Kilcullen has 'an attractive rural village feel that adds much character to the area' and which must be preserved for future generations. Their full report on Kilcullen is available here.
The overall winner was Killarney with 310 points, while Lismore (308) won the category D in which Kilcullen competed. Gold Medal winners in the category were Clonakilty, Co Cork (306), Listowel, Co Kerry (304), Kilrush, Co Clare (303), and Kenmare, Co Kerry (303).
