Charlie's last day

Kilcullen resident Charlie Talbot has a big day today, as he retires from Kildare County Council after 43 years with the local authority.

"I don't know where the time went," he told the Diary this afternoon. "I know what the calendar says, but it only seems like three weeks from this vantage point."

Charlie joined KCC 19 months after leaving school, following a stint with the Post Office working in the GPO.

For many years he has been the 'voice' of Kildare County Council, wearing his hat as Information Officer amongst a long line of other responsibilities. In addition, he has been a familiar figure at local and general election counts, on which he has worked for 42 years, most of them in a supervisory role as Deputy Returning Officer over the vote counting. He is pictured above at the most recent, the Kildare South Constituency count three weeks ago.

His many friends and colleagues are making a presentation to him at close of business today.
