In the very early days of developing television technology, a wide range of names were suggested for the concept, including Radiovision, Seeing by Wireless, Distant Electric Vision, The Electric Telescope, Visual Listening, Telephonoscope, Audiovision, The Radio Kinema, Optiphone, and Mirascope. The word television — from the Greek tele, meaning “far,” and the Latin visio, meaning “vision” — was actually coined at the 1900 Paris Exposition, a quarter of a century before the first demonstrations of the system in the mid-1920s by John Logie Baird.

Sinéad at Rising commemoration

Among those who were at the Dublin GPO over Easter at the official ceremonies to commemorate the 93rd anniversary of the Easter Rising was Sinéad Forde, daughter of Kieran Forde.

Sinéad is pictured here at the event with Mary MacAleese, President of Ireland. Sinéad's grandfather, Sean Forde, took part in the armed insurrection. She is studying nursing at DCU.
