More from Hamilton
The churches are not the only connection between Hamilton, Ontario, and Kilcullen.
My grandfather's brother, William Henry Myers (1890-1958) left Kilcullen in 1914 to serve in the Great War. He never returned to Ireland, instead emigrating to Canada, where he served for many years on the Hamilton police force, reaching the rank of Sergeant.
His eldest son, Harry Myers, was killed in action during WW2 in 1944 at the age of 24 years. His younger son, Tom Myers, died last year at the age of 86. He also served on the police force, in Simcoe, Ontario. His widow, along with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren remain in Canada.
