Post Office moves across the road
Noeleen Eston, who took over as postmistress in Kilcullen in January after the Shortt family retired, has moved the operation into brand new premises at Eurospar.
It is the first time, as far as the Diary knows, that the service has been located on that side of the Main Street.
The location previous to the Shortt's tenure beside Berney's Chemist was in the building that is now part of Nolan's butchers shop which is under reconstruction, immediately south of the arch that is now the doorway.
That was in Miss Buckley's time, and this writer remembers her well, not least because I received an award for the 'Best Magazine Article' in The Bridge for a profile of her in 1976, before she retired. As a child I remember her plugging the thick red phone lines in and out of the 'switchboard' (something like the one on this fascinating page) as she handled all phone calls coming into and out of Kilcullen.
The Shortt family spent nearly a quarter of a century looking after the Kilcullen sub-office.
We wish Noeleen and her staff the best in their new premises, in what used to be the off-licence of the supermarket. We understand it will be integrated into the shop when reconstruction currently under way is completed.
