Glasswork artistry exhibition
An exhibition of glasswork artistry at the Riverbank Arts Centre in Newbridge features pieces inspired by a trip to Newfoundland and the impressive sight of icebergs moving down from the North Pole and eventually melting in the harbour of St Johns.
Ice by Eva Kelly & Paul Kelly expresses the results of a creative desire to explore the journey of these icebergs.
The icebergs at a distance looked white but up close from the deck of an old schooner took on a whole new life.
Magnificent colours of green to deep turquoise were visible and the gradual melting of the ice formed many small waterfalls. The other fascinating thing was the sound of groaning and creaking caused by the release of trapped air in the iceberg.
Eva Kelly has tried over the past two years to translate some of these experiences and colours into glass.
Eva Kelly studied glass in Australia with renowned artists Paddy Robinson and Warren Langley. Returning to Ireland in 1986, she set up a studio in the countryside outside Kilcullen. She won major glass awards in Australia in 1984 and 1985 and has exhibited widely in Ireland.
Paul Kelly graduated from Limerick College of Art in 1999 with a Batchelor of Design (Hons) in Graphic Design. He was overall winner in Art of Refreshment Awards sponsored by Cork Dry Gin. He combines photography and graphics in his works on canvas.
The exhibition runs until Saturday 21 January 2006. Admission is free.
