A field trip to St John's Church at Yellow Bog was the afternoon event following yesterday's AGM of the County Kildare Federation of Local History Groups, held in Kilcullen's Heritage Centre, writes Brian Byrne.

At the church, Naas Local History Group's Ger McCarthy outlined what was known about the history of the building, erected in the early 1800s on a site which was possibly where a previous church had been built to replace the ancient one beside the round tower of Old Kilcullen.

Ger offered some details of the various families interred in the Yellow Bog graveyard surrounding St John's, many of whom are commemorated with plaques and stained glass windows.

Author and historian James Durney provided information on the Blacker family of Castlemartin, and some of the items in the church donated by the family. These include a Telford organ and an oak panelling in the chancel.

James also noted details of some of the local men killed while serving with the British forces in WW1, who are commemorated in the church.
