Last dance lesson for the Teach ... and then there's Sunday

Tonight, Monday 24 April, will be the final night of the Jive lessons which have been running for the past eight weeks in aid of Teach na nDaoine, writes Noel Clare.

Anyone is welcome to come along to the Cross and Passion Assembly Hall at 8.30pm — even if you haven't attended previous lessons.

On Sunday next at 4pm there will be special evening of dancing to finish off the season. There won't be any lessons — it’s just a chance to put into practice all the dance moves — but there will be plenty of people there of all levels who will be willing to give a hand.

Participants are invited to bring along a cake for sharing and there will be refreshments provided, so it promises to be a very enjoyable and sociable evening. The venue again is the Assembly Hall in CPC.

Stardust 'Teach' gig raises €2,145 for project

The amount of money raised at last Saturday’s Stardust concert in aid of Teach na nDaoine was €2,145, writes Brian Byrne.

The initiative by the band, whose key members are Noeleen Eston and her husband Joe O’Neill of Kilcullen Post Office, was their way of ‘giving something back’ for the support the local Post Office receives from the community.

The cheque is being handed over here to Steve Kinneavy of the Teach na nDaoine project steering committee.

Swinging night with Stardust for the Teach

A great night was had by all at last night’s Stardust gig in Fallons, in aid of funds for Teach na nDaoine.

'Teach' dance lessons continue on Easter Monday

Don't forget that the dance lessons continue on this bank holiday Monday night at 8.30 in the Cross and Passion College Assembly Hall, writes Noel Clare of the Teach na nDaoine Committee.

It's a perfect way to finish off the holiday weekend. Even if you haven't been at the earlier lessons you are more than welcome. New skills are taught each night so beginners are still welcome and can benefit.

Stardust for the Teach tonight

A concert by Stardust and friends in Fallons in Kilcullen tonight will be the latest in a line of fundraising events for the Teach na nDaoine Centre being developed from the Old Dispensary, writes Brian Byrne.

Stardust is the husband and wife duo Noeleen Eston and Joe O’Neill, and a number of fellow musicians will be joining them tonight.

The show is in the back room of Fallons, with tickets on sale at €10, from Kilcullen Post Office and from members of the Teach na nDaoine Committee.

The Teach na nDaoine project received full planning permission late last year, which includes an extension to the rear of the current building, which will make possible an extensive range of services, particularly to older people in the community, when it is completed.

Preparatory work to secure the former Dispensary building and make it safe for development was carried out last year by volunteers.

The project is currently in the process of clearing the various statutory certificates required before building can commence. This should be completed shortly.

A €45,000 grant from the National Lottery was received towards the funding requirements last November, and this is being supplemented by a range of fundraising events, including the ballroom dancing classes running on Monday nights in the Cross & Passion Hall.

Sharon wins Teach fundraiser raffle

Sharon Meenahan has won the Easter Hamper which was raffled by Noeleen Eston, Kilcullen postmistress, in aid of Teach na nDaoine, writes Brian Byrne.

The hamper was sponsored by Eurospar Kilcullen and Noeleen.

With her husband Joe O'Neill, Noeleen will be performing as Stardust at a concert on Saturday night in Fallons, also in aid of the Teach na nDaoine fund.

Change of venue for tonight's 'Teach' dance lessons

The jive dance lessons in aid of Teach na nDaoine are taking place tonight in the hall in Scoil Bhride, writes Noel Clare.

The entrance is down at the Community Centre end, beside playground, and the lessons dance off at 8.30pm.

All welcome even if you haven't been there previously.

The change of venue is because of preparations for the CPC production of 'The 39 Steps'.

Big turnout for 'Teach' dancing classes

Maybe it was the ‘Dancing with the Stars’ effect, but even the organisers of the series of dance classes in aid of Teach na nDaoine were surprised at the large turnout for the opening session last night, writes Brian Byrne.

Around 80 people registered for the eight-session series of classes which will be run on Monday nights in the CPC Assembly Hall.

“It was very much an unknown quantity,” said Teach committee member Noel Clare as he worked to clear traffic jams of cars at the school entrance in run up to the class. “But it’s a full house.”

Jacinta Sully, another committee member, was busy registering those who had arrived. “It’s a good mix of age, and quite a few men,” she noted, “though there are more women, as is usual.” There are places for more, especially men, for next week. And it all looked like fun.

The teacher is Caroline Finlay, working with the help of dancers Jim McCormack, Martin Connolly, Marie Fennell, Tina Davis, Teresa Monagle, Noel Rosney and Ena Sower.

Next session, next Monday, 8.30pm-10pm.

REMINDER: Learn to dance for the Teach

A reminder that an eight-week programme of dance lessons as a fundraiser for Teach na nDaoine begins tonight, Monday 6 March, writes Jacinta Sully.

The classes will include lessons in Old Style, Jive, Modern, and Cha Cha.

They will be held on Monday evenings in the CPC Assembly Hall between 8.30-10pm. The lessons are suitable for all ages.

Knitting sale today for Teach na nDaoine

A Knitted & Crocheted goods sale will be held today, Saturday 17 December, in aid of Teach na nDaoine.

The venue is the Town Hall, and the event will run from 10am-2pm.

Teach stand at Scoil Bhride fair

A stall with local knitted and crocheted craft will be at the Scoil Bhride Christmas Fair on Sunday afternoon, in aid of the Teach na nDaoine project, writes Jacinta Sully.

They will include hats, scarves, kids clothing, tea cosies, gloves, blankets, all kindly done by local people.

If you have a spare hour or two, call down to get your Christmas stocking fillers.

Teach na nDaoine project gets €45,000 grant

The Teach na nDaoine project has been granted €45,000 in National Lottery funding under the auspices of the Department of Health, writes Brian Byrne.

It’s part of a total of €90,000 funding for County Kildare projects announced today by Minister Simon Harris. The other schemes funded are Older Voices Kildare (€20,000), and the Athy Community Addiction Response ACAR (€9,500), while the Rett Syndrome Association is being allocated €6,000, and €10,000 is going to Celbridge Community Centre.

The funding has been welcomed by FG Deputy Martin Heydon, who noted that many of these projects are staffed by volunteers to provide much needed services in their local communities.

“As a Committee member of Teach na nDaoine in Kilcullen, I am particularly delighted at an allocation of €45,000 towards the Teach na nDaoine project,” he said. “When added to ongoing local fundraising it will help the committee to continue its work in developing the new centre in Kilcullen.”

The project recently was granted planning permission for an extension to the centre, currently being refurbished from the former Dispensary building. Much of the work to date has been provided as a contribution by local contractors.

Weather was kind to 'Rock for the Teach'

The weather was kind and balmy for last evening's ‘Rock for the Teach’ Elvis night at The Mill Bar, writes Brian Byrne, which as well as being a fundraiser was also something of a celebration at the news of the granting of planning permission for the Teach na nDaoine project's extension.

Unfortunately, the Diary couldn’t stay for the highlights of the night, but we did manage to get some pics of the support for the night.
