Council prepared for blizzard clearance

Kildare County Council has nine of its own snowploughs available for use and has been keeping main roads cleared, in conjunction with 20 other plough units from private contractors and the Defence Forces, writes Brian Byrne.

However, while roads are continuously being treated during this extreme weather, motorists should not assume they are safe to drive on.

Civil Defence are using seven 4WD drive vehicles to assist members of the public in difficulty and to ensure Kildare County Council truck drivers and members of An Garda Siochana can get to their places of work.

Water Services continue to monitor the water infrastructure in Kildare and have not experienced any major issues so far.

For reasons of public safety the National Emergency Coordinating Group is advising that people should not venture out of doors while the Red Level Warning is in place in their area. Transport Infrastructure Ireland is advising that nobody should drive during blizzard conditions, except in an emergency situation. In that instance, they should ask for support from emergency services.

The public are also encouraged to check on vulnerable neighbours.

The Peter McVerry Trust, on behalf of Kildare County Council, have put the Cold Weather Initiative for the county into operation to provide shelter for people sleeping rough during the severe weather conditions. The Freephone number for this service is 1800 804307 and is operational at all times.

All Kildare County Council offices and libraries are closed until Monday morning, (5th March).

Urgent matters can be dealt with by phoning 1890 500333.
