May launch for Kilcullen in Bloom 2018

'Kilcullen in Bloom 2018' will be launched on 4 May this year, writes Brian Byrne.

In a discussion on the project at the most recent meeting of Kilcullen Community Action, it was also decided to provide new 'Supporting Kilcullen in Bloom 2018' window signs for residences and businesses who support the initiative.

Eoin Houlihan, who managed KIB last year for KCA, noted that the flowers did provide a considerable 'visual value'. KCA chairman Ray Kelly agreed, but said it was 'disheartening' when the Tidy Towns results came out and points had not been given for the initiative. He noted that the cost last year was 'significant' but this had been helped by donations and grants.

Joan Forde said that, regardless of not getting Tidy Towns points, and the costs involved, that the town and its residents appreciated the initiative, and many people had said it.

Following a discussion on how to trim costs of the project for 2018, it was decided that the flowers would be ordered from a wholesaler, and consideration will be given to have the window boxes subsequently installed by a contractor.

There was a technical discussion on the frequency of watering, and on the possible environmental impact of the use of wetting agents to cut down on how often watering was done. Kieron Forde said, in the group's experience, that there is no way that just watering twice a week would be adequate.

Noel Clare agreed, and also suggested that the supplier's advice on choice of a 'hardy' variety and colours should be requested in advance of placing the order.
