A mixed fortnight for Kilcullen Badminton Club
It has been another busy fortnight for Kilcullen Badminton Club, writes Tara O'Neill. Some teams took part in Dublin Cup semi-finals while the Dublin League and Southwest Leinster League fixtures continued as normal.
Kilcullen had three mixed teams make it through to the Cup semi-finals which took place on Sunday 28 January — Barry O’Neill’s Division 6 team, Olivier Valory’s Division 9 Mixed team and Lynsey Walsh’s Division 2 team. Olivier’s Division 9 team were to be first up being scheduled to play St Brigid’s on the earlier slot on the Sunday but had to pull out due to illness. Lynsey’s and Barry’s teams had the added benefit of playing on courts side by side but the semi-finals night was just not to be their night as they lost out to Ailesbury and PBAI respectively. All teams are still looking like good competitors for their respective league semi-finals.
This week began on a positive note with our Division 2 Mixed team playing Away to South County Dublin and coming away with a comprehensive 4-0 win. Grade 7 Mixed travelled to Portlaoise on the same night and also secured a 4-0 win, securing them a place in the Southwest Semi-Final. Division 3 Mixed played Old School at home on Tuesday night and secured a safe 2-2 draw. Division 6 Mixed made the journey to D.N.S the following night to play Raheny and also came away with a good win.
It was bad news this Thursday just gone, for the Division 6 Men’s team who travelled away to Nomads. One of Kilcullen’s players sustained a painful injury mid match and had to give a walkover to their opponents. We wish Richie a speedy recovery. Back at home the same night our Division 3 Ladies lost to a strong Ailesbury team.
Finally, best of luck to our Grade 3 Mixed team who will play in the Southwest Leinster League Semi-Final next Tuesday 13th of February in Carlow LTC against Carlow YM. The team have had two tough matches against the YM so a place in the final is sure to be hard fought for.
