Storm damage to Teach build to be fixed this week

With weather conditions a little easier following storms Ophelia and Brian, the people behind the Teach na nDaoine project are hoping to repair damage to the building this week, writes Brian Byrne.

At the height of Ophelia, two freshly built concrete block gables came down in different parts of the new build, fortunately without causing injury or external damage.

"It was unfortunate, because we were just about to tie them in with roofing trusses, which would have held them," says TnD committee member Albert Keenan. "This has set us back a little, but we hope to have the block-layer back this week."

The overall project is going well, though somewhat behind the original hoped-for schedule because of lengthy permit applications. The heating and plumbing in the main old dispensary building has been completed, and once the roof is on the rest of the project can be continued under cover.

The project committee have prepared a brochure on the progress and future of Teach na nDaoine, which will detail funding raised and spent to date, and what is still required.

Yesterday's Monster Auction was the latest in a series of successful fundraisers, and one in the planning stage just now is a New Year's Eve Gala event in Fallons, the proceeds of which will go to the funds.
