Local cheques for Pieta House presented
A cheque for €17,322 was presented to Marie Peelo of Pieta House last night by the organisers of this year's Dawn Walk and the Twilight Chorus Concert, writes Brian Byrne.
Part of that donation included €3,170 raised by supporters of Laura Fitzgerald from Laura's Flowers & Gifts in Athgarvan, who competed in a Triathlon for the cause.
At the handover in O'Connells Bar, Marie Peelo expressed her heartfelt thanks on behalf of Pieta House and the people the organisation serves.
"It is fundraising by groups like these which keeps our doors open," she said, noting that 84pc of Pieta House funding comes from voluntary fundraisers all over the country.
Some 5,800 people in crisis came through those same doors last year, and Marie added that it is the 'inspiration' from local committees that encourages the organisation to continue, and to expand its services.
"Getting funding from the many ordinary people who support local events like in Kilcullen also allows us to provide services to other special groups, such as Traveller and LGBT, and also allowed us to set up our helpline."
She added that the services of Pieta House are not just for people in crisis and contemplating suicide, but also for those bereaved because a family member or friend has taken their own life. The helpline is 1800 247247.
At last night's event, Lorna Brophy of the local committee thanked all who had contributed so generously to this year's Dawn Walk, and the Twilight Chorus Concert for which she also noted the generosity of those who entertained the audience in market square.
