Bus shelters coming ... but not for Kilcullen

A recent decision by the National Transport Authority to provide bus shelters in a number of locations in County Kildare indicates that a campaign to get one in Kilcullen has failed, writes Brian Byrne.

A petition with 800 signatures gathered in Kilcullen and handed in to Kildare County Council in December 2014 appears to not to have achieved its aim.

The signatures were gathered by the Transitional Training Programme at the Bridge Community, a number of whose members used buses to get to and from Kilcullen from their homes in Naas, Newbridge and Athy. They are pictured above handing it in, in the presence of Cllr Sorcha O'Neill and Naas MD area engineer Davis Reel.

The matter received a significant amount of support from local councillors, and generated a number of questions at Kildare County Council.

The recent announcement from the NTA related to shelters being agreed for Newbridge, Kildare town, and Allenwood.

Fiona O'Loughlin TD has expressed her delight at the news following her 'continued contact' last year with the NTA, Bus Eireann and Kildare County Council in pursuit of adequate shelter options.

"I am hopeful that the new shelters for Newbridge will be installed before the harsh winter months set in," she said in statement issued today.
