Preparations for tomorrow's market square consultation day
The market square will be closed off by barriers from this evening in order to facilitate tomorrow's public consultation day on the future development of the square, writes Brian Byrne.
Tidy Towns volunteers will spend time this evening sweeping and cleaning the square for the event, which will run from 11am to 4pm on Saturday.
Display boards in the vacant Il Ficio unit will feature various events which have been centred around the square down recent years, including River Festivals and the recent Twilight Chorus concert in aid of Pieta House. There will also be a video showing some of these events.
There will also be old and modern maps of the area, including 3D modelling of the square and its environs carried out gratis by Murphy Surveys Limited.
The KFM Radio Roadcaster will be broadcasting from the square during the morning, and will include interviews with members of the KCA committee behind the event, as well as local representatives and a Council official.
Face-painting, a 'Treasure Trail' hunt, a 'pop-up' bakery and other attractions will add a festive air to the day, during which everyone is welcome to make suggestions on how they'd like to see the square used in the future.
A display of art by pupils from Scoil Bhride will show some of the thoughts in that form of the generation who will inherit the square over the coming decades.
On the day, there will be paper and art materials for further drawings by anyone who wants to use them.
Questionnaires will be available for people to fill in with their views on what direction should be taken.
The committee emphasises again that no plan has yet been formulated and the day is for gathering the views of residents and businesses on how they would like to see the area developed.
From this information, a plan will be produced and used in an application for funding for the project, which is supported by Kildare County Council.
