Great weekend Shuttlefest

It was a successful weekend over all for Kilcullen Badminton Club as they took part in the South West Leinster Badminton League and Cup’s annual ‘Shuttlefest’ tournament in Kilcullen Community Centre, writes Tara O'Neill.

The hall was a hive of activity from the Friday night when volunteers from the club itself and various other clubs had the arduous task of laying the ‘green mats’ in preparation for the weekend of badminton ahead. There was an enthusiastic, light-hearted and fun atmosphere about the place from the moment the first entrants arrived for registration on the Saturday morning, as players looked forward to what was to be for many, their first competitive games of the new badminton season.

Saturday saw the Grade 4,5 and 6 Ladies, Mixed and Men’s events take place with Kilcullen members coming away with plenty of prizes. Kat Logan and Enda O’Neill were the first up to the podium when they beat a pair from Athy to secure the Grade 4 Mixed title and the first Kilcullen title of the day. The men’s event saw a host of Kilcullen players give their all in some magnificent games of badminton. Vincent Coller and John Mullen claimed the Grade 4 title while Fintan Phelan and his partner Keith O’Neill made their debut as a pairing and came runners up in the Grade 5 event.

Sunday’s participants were not to be outshined by Saturday’s successful day, and saw a number of Kilcullen members once again earn themselves some titles. Mick Cass and his partner David Casey were runners up in the Grade 3 men’s while David Jackson and Murt Dunne put up a tough fight against a tough Eire Friends pair and also ‘bagged’ themselves a runners up prize in the Grade 2 event.

Our ‘Tuck shop’ was a great success, raising much needed funds for the club. A big thank you to all who donated food and gave up their free time to run the shop. Special thanks to Ciaran and Cian who volunteered their services, little legends!

Finally, I would like to say one massive ‘well done’ to all of our members who took part in the tournament over the weekend. It was great to see KBC so well represented and the high standard to which every single one of our players played. Well done all!
