Rafts and Ducks and now heading to the Festival Finale

A little flush of rain just after the Duck Race finished didn’t do any more than cool off the crowds who have been thronging the square area, the bridge and the Valley park for the whole afternoon, writes Brian Byrne.

Before the ducks we had the Raft Race, though in the end there were only two contenders for first place, which was taken by O’Connell’s Bar from an all-girls’ Black Widow Pirates raft whose crew gave as good as they got in the subsequent water fight.

Long after, the Fallons Jeep arrived, must have been stuck in low gear all the way (should have used a Land Rover).

Food and drink still going out strongly in the square, and all the amusements are packed with youngsters. Sometime after five o’clock, Paddy Casey will play, and there’s a palpable air of expectation for that gig now.

It’s the seventh Kilcullen River Festival in eight years, and can certainly be chalked up as another of the most successful ones.

Well done, all concerned, making Kilcullen the centre of Kildare one more time.
