Today is World Book Day

As we are celebrating World Book Day in Ireland today, this week’s books are those featured in an exciting promotion, writes Aidan Cunnane of Woodbine Books.

Over the last 20 years, World Book Day has become firmly established as Ireland’s biggest annual event promoting the enjoyment of books and reading. The main aim is to encourage children to explore the pleasure of books and reading by providing them with an opportunity to have a book of their own.

Every year, €1.50 book tokens are distributed to almost every school/nursery age child in the country. To date, World Book Day has distributed over 170 million vouchers and sold over 10 million £1/€1.50 books in the Ireland and the UK. Children are encouraged to visit their local bookshop where they can exchange their tokens for one of eleven exclusive new books OR get €1.50 off a full-price book.

In 2017, we have an incredible line-up of special edition €1.50 books for children to get excited about, plus an exclusive title from The O’Brien Press for Irish readers: Fast Forward by Judi Curtin.
The list of titles is:

Blob (David Walliams); Island (David Almond); Horrid Henry (Francesca Simon); Good Old Timmy - Famous Five (Enid Blyton); Dead Of Night (Michael Grant); Fast Forward (Judi Curtin); Where's Wally - The Fantastic Journey (Michael Handford); Butterfly Beach (Jacqueline Wilson); Princess Mirror-Belle (Julia Donaldson); Everyone Loves Underpants (Claire Freedman & Ben Cort); and Peppa Loves World Book Day.
