A “Good Friday” for Kilcullen Badminton Club.

A good Friday for the three teams in action on 10 March but one could argue the fine voices of “local crooners” Ronan Murphy and PJ Loydon who were testing the sound system could have put the opposition off! writes Enda O'Neill, PRO of KBC.

On Court 2 the Division 6 Mix team captained by Enda O’Neill hosted third place rivals Ashbourne in a crucial group match. Enda and the team needed a win to put enough light between themselves and Ashbourne to almost assure “The Rags” a quarter final. The match didn’t get off to the perfect start when Enda and Barry O’Neill were beaten in three sets in the mens game, Kathrin Logan and Jennifer Monaghan steadied the ship taking the ladies in two sets. Kathrin and Enda won their mix game in a tricky three setter but Jennifer and Barry took their mix in two sets dominating the Ashbourne pair. The Kilcullen team winning on a final score of 3-1. This win keeps them top of the table with 23 points, with Viking currently second on 19 points but with two matches in hand. If the Kilcullen side can get at least a point in their last match againist Dunboyne the knock out stages is guaranteed. Well done Enda, Kathrin, Jen and Barry on another great win and good luck in their last match at home on March 23.

Tara O’Neill and her Division 4 Ladies hosted Raheny on Court 3, Tara had to draft in two subs for this match and in stepped Barbara Coffee and Chesley Cox. In this one sided contest “The Ragettes” simply blew their challengers away beating them comprehensively 4-0. Tara and Siobhan got them off to a great start with a fantastic win in the first ladies, super subs Barbara and Chelsey then also took the second ladies in two sets. Tara and Chelsey then took third ladies putting Kilcullen 3-0 up going into the last game and when Siobhan and Barbara took the fourth ladies the white wash was complete. Well done to the KBC ladies who top their group with 21 points and are certain to get to the playoffs next month. The teams next match is a home fixture against Rathfarnham Parish on Tuesday March 14.

Oisin Egan and the Division 7 Men also faced Raheny and this match was played on Court 4. Oisin also required a sub as team mate Ben Phelan was unavailable so in jumped Ross Cole. The KBC men needed a win to keep the pressure on table toppers Tolka Rovers who have 20 points and second place Skerries who have 17 points and are only keeping our Kilcullen in third by virtue of sets won. A win in this match was crucial to keep Oisin's team in the hunt. The Kilcullen men didn’t disappoint and beat Raheny 3-1. This win puts the lads in second place with 20 points but the Skerries quartet have a game in hand. Well played Oisin and his team, Kasi Va, Fintan Phelan and Ross Cole. Oisin’s team face Skerries away on Friday March 20 in another must win match for the Rags.

Finally if you are looking for something to do on Paddy's night there is a fantastic band called Bunoscionn playing in Judge Roy Beans in Newbridge at 8pm, they are a band who come highly recommended.
