Badminton update
Our Dublin District League campaign got off to a bad start this week when Olivier P Valroy and his Division 9 Mix team travelled to play Bray/Greystones in a very tough Dublin District League match on Sunday 15 January, writes Kilcullen Badminton Club PRO Enda O'Neill.
Sunday wasn’t to be their day however, losing 3-1 to a very experienced Bray/Greystones side. The team got off to a promising start with Olivier and Sean “Slippers” McGrath winning the mens doubles in three sets this after loosing the first set 21-11. Maeve P Valroy and Thersea McGlynn lost in two and even though the first mix went to three close sets, Maeve and Sean lost in a hard fought game. Hard luck to Olivier and his team but any point away from home is a good point.
Martin and his Division 4 men didn’t fare any better when they travelled to Eire Friends on Monday 13 January in their Cup Quarter Final. The lads were on the receiving end of a 3-1 defeat in a cracking match where Vincent Coller was called into action as regular team mate Barry O’Neill was unavailible. Hard luck to Martin, Owen Wallace, Mick Cass and sub Vincent on a great effort against the cup favourites. Martin and the team's next outing is away on Wednesday 18 January against Titans.
On Tuesday 17 January Maeve P Valroy and the Division 8 Ladies travelled to Danum in the Dublion District League. Maeve and the girls were delighted to report a fantastic 3-1 victory over their counterparts. Maeve will visit Clontarf Parish in their next match, well done to Maeve and her team mates on a great away victory.
In the Southwest League this week Owen Wallace and the Grade 3 Mix team visited a competitive Bough in Wicklow. In a hard fought match Owens eight person team came away with a 4-4 draw. A good result when added to their other two results beating Bough 6-2 at home and also beating Johnswell 6-2 in their away fixture. This result gives Owen a semi final spot in the Grade 3 South West Mix League, well done Owen, Tara O’Neill, Bernie Smith, Barbara Coffey, John Mullen, Mick Cass, Ray Dalton and super sub Siobhan Willis.
Kilcullen Badminton Clubs Juvenile Club is now again recruiting new players all levels are more than welcome and the only condition is you are under 18. If you are interested please don’t hesitate to contact Trina Walsh on 087 2288104.
Finally more KBC players have made it into the Southwest Championship finals with a BIG shout out to Debbie Mangan and her partner Rodha Griffith making it to the Grade 3 Mix Ladies Final, problem is she will be playing against fellow KBC pair Siobhan Willis and Tara O’Neill. Also getting a mention and not letting the lads down is Mick Cass and Owen Wallace who have made it to the Grade 3 Mens Final but will face some stiff opposition from the Baltinglass pair of Colm Cooney and Jimmy Germaine, well done to the KBC lads.
