Badminton update
After a long, relaxing Christmas break Kilcullen Badminton Club was back in full swing from Thursday 5 January, writes club PRO Enda O’Neill. Two teams travelled to Ailsbury on that date and the teams in question were Sinead Kelly’s Division 2 Ladies and Martin Dunne’s Division 2 Men.
Starting with the mens, this journey southside proved to be a disappointing trip, that lads so far have had a slow start to their season and unfortunately their run of bad luck continued. The Ailsbury men were triumphant and beat the Kilcullen side in a one ended affair. Hard luck to Martin and his team who hope to have better luck in their next fixture against Mount Pleasant on Monday 9 January.
The ladies had a more successful result in their match. In the home fixture at the complex Ailsbury managed to grab a 2-2 draw but the ragettes weren’t going to let this one slip and they hammered the Ailsbury ladies 4-0. Sinead and her team now sit in a very strong position with two wins and a draw from their three fixtures. Sinead and the ladies face Carlow YM in their next match on Monday 9 January, well done Sinead, Gillian K. Smith, Lynsey Walsh and Debbie Mangan.
On Friday 6 January the Complex was the venue for two Dublin District Cup Quarter Finals, the teams being Tara O’Neill’s Division 4 Ladies and Enda O’Neill’s Division 6 Mix. On Court 2 Tara’s team hosted Raheny and the KBC Ladies didn’t hold back’ putting the Raheny Ladies on the back foot straight from the off. Tara and Barbara Coffey went out first and took their game easily in two sets, next out were Bernie Smyth and Karen O’Neill and again our ladies took their game in two. Tara and Bernie finished the match again with an impressive two set victory in the third game beating their counterparts 3-0, putting the girls into a semi final in Baldoyle in February. Good luck to the ladies who face Old School next in the league match in Whitehall Road.
Court 3 proved to be where all the excitement was at with Enda and the Division 6 Mix hosting local rivals Kildare CWMS in their Quarter Final. Kathrin Logan and Jennifer Monaghan were first out and they played the Kildare pair of Anne Pyke and Nicola Schaill, and after a slow start the KBC ladies took the game in two sets 21-14, 21-19. Enda and Barry O’Neill were next out against Joe Kirwin and Paul Waters. The KBC pair took the first set 21-17, their second set turned out to be a real cracker, with Enda and Barry finding themselves 20-12 down. With a mammoth effort and some fantastic play the KBC lads managed to get it back to 20-20 and finally broke the Kildare pair beating them 27-25, the come back of the season so far. This put KBC 2-0 up and only needing the mix to give themselves a semi final spot. Jen and Barry duly obliged and beat Anne and Joe in three sets, again coming back in the third set to win 21-19, KBC winning 3-0.
Enda and the team’s next fixture is away to Ashbourne on Tuesday 10 January in the league and hopefully they can keep their winning streak going.
The club would also like to wish Tara O’Neill and Siobhan Willis the best of luck in the Grade 3 Ladies South West Championship Final which is been held Carlow on 21 January. The pair are pictured above.
