Badminton update

KBC competed in three South West League Finals over the last two weeks, winning two and loosing one, writes Enda O'Neill, PRO of Kilcullen Badminton Club.

The venues for the finals were Carlow LTC and on Thursday 24 November Owen Wallace and his Grade 3 Men’s A faced Ballinabranna who had the week previous narrowly dumped Vincent and the Grade 3 Men’s B team out in the semi final. Owen and the lads got off to a flying start winning the first three games. In the fourth Ballinabranna pulled one back, but the Kilcullen boys still had a strong 3-1 lead. Martin Carrigan and new boy Barry O’Neill went out to play the fifth game and took it in three sets and in doing so also took the cup back to Kilcullen. This is a great ending to the SWL season for the lads and especially Barry in his first season at the club.

Kasi Va and his Grade 5 Men also competed in their Mens Final against Turin Badminton Club on Tuesday 29 November. So far it has been a fantastic season for this newly formed team and getting to a final in such a competitive league is a great achievement. Unfortunately Kasi and his team didn’t get over the finish line on this occasion and were beaten 4-0. Well done though to Kasi and his team of Ben Phelan, Oisin Egan and another quality new player Ross Cole on a great SWL debut season.

In the Ladies Grade 4 Final Jennifier Monaghan (of Shabby Chic on the hill fame!) and her lovely ladies faced a strong Annacura side. In the league matches Jen and her team hadn’t much luck against this strong side but things were about to change in the final. Jen and Kathrin Logan got them off to a great start winning their first game, the second with Sarah Walshe and Siobhan Willis kept the winning streak going taking their game in two sets. A stunned Annacurra pulled one game back in the third but the KBC girls quickly put down any hope that Annacurra had, by winning the next two games. So a second South West League Trophy was taken Liffey Side. Well done on a great performance from Jen Monaghan, Kathrin Logan, Siobhan Willis and Sarah Walshe and congrats on their league win.

In other news it was a busy week for the Division 6 Mix team captained by Enda, who were out on Monday 28 November and Tuesday 29 November in both Dublin District League and Cup matches. On Monday the team visited a tough Eire Friends in the second round of the Cup and won 3-0 without any fuss in a great performance. On Tuesday they travelled to St Killian's of Greystones in their second DDL match. It proved to be another good night for the KBC outfit beating their counterparts 3-1 in a close game of badminton. Enda's team now face Kildare CWMS in the Quarter Finals of the DD Cup in the new year. Their next outing in the DD League will be an away fixture to Ashbourne.

Olivier P Valroy and the Division 9 Mix team also played in the second round of the DD Cup and had a great home win againist Brays, Nomads. Oliver and his team didn’t take long to defeat Nomads winning this great match 3-1. Well done to Olivier, Theresa McGlynn, Maeve P Valroy and Sean “Slippers” McGrath who now wait to see who their next opponents will be.

Finally Tara O’Neill's Division 4 ladies also played in the Dublin District League on Wednesday 23 November away to Raheny. The KBC girls got off to a great start and won the match 3-1 in a tough away venue, well done to Tara, Bernie Smith, Barbara Coffee and Karen O’Neill on a great DDL debut.
