Cycling towards Thompson's Cross



Not to belabour the Thompson’s Cross situation, writes Brian Byrne, but here’s what the traffic experience is like for a cyclist moved out into the main traffic on the approach from Kilcullen. Imagine what it's like at the intersection itself ...

In the latest edition of the Rules of the Road in Ireland, an overtaking separation distance from a cyclist is recommended as at least 1.5 metres. If my bike was moving on the road, there's no way space for a 1.5 metres separation without the overtaking car having to cross the white line.

Just for clarity, the sequence above was taken over a 3.5min duration, so of course a travelling cyclist would have cleared the area before being overtaken by all these cars.
