Ivan to launch Kilcullen 'Memories'
Kilcullen's own Mayor of Kildare, Councillor Ivan Keatley, will be launching 'Portrait of Memories: Kilcullen 1916-2016 A collection of oral history interviews' on Culture Night, Thursday 15 September, in Kilcullen Community Library.
The event kicks off at at 7.30pm and will feature recordings of local people interviewed in recent months about their memories and activities in Kilcullen.
The Kilcullen evening starts a weekend of some 90 cultural events which will be held across County Kildare. RTE broadcaster Brenda Donohue is the county's ambassador for the weekend which she says is an opportunity for people to reacquaint themselves with familiar places and projects, and also discover 'treasures in this culture-rich county’.
The free events will be located around history, music, art and design, cinema, nature, food and literature.
For instance you can celebrate 100 years since the birth of Roald Dahl dressing up as and drawing your favourite character and enjoy a walk in one of the magnificent parks and gardens of the county: Larchill in Kilcock, the Lodge Park Walled Garden in Straffan, Coolcarrigan and De Burghs in Naas or the Japanese Gardens in Kildare town.
Music lovers have a series of concerts to choose from — an organ recital at Maynooth College’s Chapel, Lunchtime Jazz at Urban Kitchen in Naas, Route 66 Big Band at Castletown and the Millicent singers in Westgrove Hotel, jfor instance. The 1st German Electrophonic Orchestra will perform ‘Girls & Stations’ in Kildare and Newbridge stations: meet this group of German and Irish musicians called Clara in their journey to Clara.
Stories written by school children from the local area in the 1930s can be read at the Bog of Allen Nature Centre, while there's a Troubadour Poet Experience in Naas. You can visit Master Craftsman Garvan de Bruir’s Open Workshop or give it a try and make your own artwork at Crookstown Craft Village and Croi Anu Creative Centre in Moone.
