KBC success in Kick Start Tournament.
As the badminton season draws near, Dublin District Leagues and Cups ran their first major seeded tournament and true to form, Kilcullen Badminton Club had some success, writes club PRO Enda O’Neill.
Saturday 20 August in the morning session, Kathrin Logan and Tara O’Neill represented the club in the Division 5 Ladies doubles. The KBC girls progressed through the group winning their five qualifying games. In the final they met Jina Lee and Quinling Pu representing Sheriff Street of Dublin. Kathrin and Tara took no prisoners and beat the Sheriff Street pair 2-0 in a great final.
The evening session John Mullen and KBC’s newest member Barry O’Neill played in the Division 5 Mens doubles. John has played against Barry on numerous occasions (when Barry played with Knocklyon) but the newest Kilcullen pairing decided to give it a bash together for a change. For the two lads who have never played competitive badminton together, their first outing was a great success. The lads made it to the Final only to be beaten in three set’s. The third set went to a tie break with John and Barry loosing out 22-20 to Kevin Coulomb and Des Leong from Viking Badminton Club again from Dublin.
On Sunday 21 August Tara O’Neill crowned off a great weekend of badminton playing with David Jackson in the Division 3 Mix doubles. Tara and David have played last season in the South West League where Tara subbed for KBC’s Grade 2 Mix doubles team. Once again this partnership proved successful with Tara and David beating a well coached Gealine McKenna and Frankie Saul from Boyne Badminton Club.
Our next major seeded tournament before the Leagues start is the South West League and Cups Shuttlefest which is been hosted in the Kilcullen Community Centre (for the second year running) on Saturday 2 September and Sunday 3 September. Needless to say all are welcome to come play or have a cuppa and a bun and watch some good badminton.
As always well done to all who played last weekend in the Kick-start Tourney!
Finally Kilcullen Badminton Club would like to sincerely thank Bernard Berney Pharmacy, O’Connells Bar and Brendan O’ Connell Insurances Limited for their kind donation to the club recently. While we are so successful in the leagues that we compete in, we are still compared to some Dublin Clubs a small fish in the pond. We at KBC want our club affordable to all who want to play but unfortunately there are still costs to be covered and any help is greatly appreciated.
