Disability seminar in Kilcullen

A seminar to mark United Nations Disability Day 2015 will be held in the McMahon KARE Centre next Thursday, hosted by Cllr Fiona O'Loughlin, writes Brian Byrne.

The theme of the event this year is 'Inclusion matters: access and empowerment of people with all abilities', and all are welcome to the seminar, which starts at 11am. Booking is essential, by contacting 045 436792.

Speakers will include Christy Lynch, CEO of KARE, who will present an overview of the National Policy on Disability. Others speaking include Gerry Maguire, chairman of Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Ireland, wheelchair user Daniel Riordan of Club 2000, and stroke survivor Lisa O'Donoghue. There will also be contributions from Noirin Duggan on the need for more support units in primary schools, and Edel Browne Cullen on shortfalls in treatment for children with rare conditions.

Cllr O'Loughlin says the implementation of policies is the key issue in the area at the moment, while the number one challenge is to end the prejudice and limitations that people with disability face.
