'Claim tax refunds on senior care fees'

The local Home Instead Senior Care office is reminding those who avail of home care to be sure they apply for any tax refunds due on the fees.

Owner of Kildare Home Instead franchise Amanda Bohan notes that there's a four-year time limit for reclaiming such refunds, so anyone with unclaimed rebates for as far back as 2011 must be applied for before 31 December 2015.

“Being a carer can be physically and emotionally exhausting. Caregivers often feel overwhelmed by the work and the demands of those receiving their care," Amanda Bohan says. "It is therefore important for family carers to be aware of relevant allowances and entitlements to support them in making home care available for loved ones."

It was announced in Budget 2016 that the Home Carer's Tax Credit will increase from €810 to €1,000 in 2016. The home carer’s income threshold will also increase from €5,080 to €7,200.
