Illuminate to eliminate theft

The Garda Commissioner has designated Tuesday 22nd September to Saturday 26th September 2015 as the next “Supporting Safer Communities” campaign, writes Sgt George Doherty, Crime Prevention Officer, An Garda Siochana.

As the main campaign theme will focus on burglary, crime prevention and reduction, the key message to the public is to "Do the ‘Light’ thing; Illuminate to eliminate burglary”.

During the winter months, burglaries increase between the hours of 5pm to 10pm. The public are encouraged to make their homes appear occupied by using timer switches to turn on lights or other appliances when no one is home. Security lighting outside homes is also an effective burglary deterrent.
