Great Gospel Choir finale concert ('til September)
It was always going to be a great night, so it sold out a week or more before the event, but for those lucky enough to get to the Kilcullen Gospel Choir's end of year show, it was better than great, writes Brian Byrne.
The guest performer was Rob Strong, a really terrific catch for the group to have with them. Though it's arguable that on their own they had enough choral and solo talents to keep all in the CPC Assembly Hall in very swinging form indeed.
Musical Director Phionagh Gibson wasn't letting it all flow one way, though. She called on the audience to take their part, and when Phionagh calls, you get to it.
As far as the Gospel Choir itself goes, it seems so extraordinary that they are just 13 months beyond the time they got together for their first rehearsal, in the Camphill Community Hall. From an initial 18, there are now 38, mostly from Kilcullen but with members also from Blessington, Ballymore, Newbridge and Milltown.
For some reason, it's very hard to get men involved in most musical enterprises, and the Kilcullen GC is no different ... so there are just four male voices among the membership. More will be very much welcomed.
The Gospel Choir has performed regularly at the Vigil Mass in Kilcullen Parish Church, at events around town including the switching on of the Christmas lights in December, and any other chance they get.
They're finished now until September, but certainly closed their first full season with a bang.
