KBC make two SWL Finals
Another successful week for the club this week, with KBC Grade 2 and Grade 4 mix teams making the South West Leinster Finals, writes Enda O'Neill, PRO of Kilcullen Badminton Club. The finals are to be contested on Monday the 9th of February and will be held in the neutral venue of Baltinglass Badminton Club.
Sarah's Grade 4 Mix team played a very young Kinnity Badminton Club in Carlow LTC on Tuesday last and dominated this semi final match. KBC were 4-0 up after the ladies and mens doubles only dropping 1 set in the four games. KBC lost their first mix game but Jen Monaghan and Vincent Collier closed the match in the second mix winning comfortably in 2 sets and given Kilcullen a 5-1 victory. Sarah's team now will play their rivals Ballinabranna who finished second in their group only 1 point behind Kilcullen. This makes the finals a very interesting one as both KBC and Ballinabranna beat each other once in the group matches. Good luck to Sarah, Jen, Helen, Tara, Enda, Vincent, John and Fintan the Grade 4 Mix team.
On the same night Dave McClean's Grade 2 Mixed will play Portarlington who beat Carlow YM in the semi final. Dave's team topped their group giving them a straight route to the finals. Good luck to Dave, Lynsey, Norrie, Sinead, Annette, Gareth, Darren and Murt and hopefully KBC will have two new trophies to add to the cabinet.
On Sunday February 1st, Kildare Badminton Association held the Kildare Open in the Kilcullen Community Centre. This competition is held annually and the winners of the different grades go to represent their clubs and county in the county championship. Needless to say KBC had great success in the competition and the following pairs were crowned Kildare Champions, Grade 2 Ladies Singles champion was Lynsey Walsh, Grade 2 Ladies doubles Champions were Lynsey Walsh and Sinead Kelly, Grade 5 Ladies Doubles went to Kath Logan and Tara Ni Neill, Grade 4 Mens winners were Vincent Collier and Enda O’Neill, Grade 2 Mix went to Lynsey Walsh and Gareth Hogan, Grade 5 Mix was Helen Rouse and Sean Gordon and finally the Grade 6 Champions were Kath Logan and Ben Phelan. Well done to all and good luck in the County Open Championships.
Finally well done and thanks to the organisers Caroline Sheedy, Sinead Kelly, Gareth Hogan, Vincent Collier (MC) and Clive Cole who collected the funds on the day. Before I sign off the club would like to wish Dave's Division 2 team and Sinead's Division 3 team who will play their respective Dublin District Cup Finals on Thursday 5 February and Friday 6 February in Whitehall Road all I can say is “Up the RAGS!”
