Nicholastown Estates 75th Anniversary
This year sees Nicholastown Residents celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the building of the estate, writes Ray Kelly. It is one of the oldest estates in the county and was built on land purchased by Kildare County Council from Mrs Brigid Dowling of the Cross Roads Kilcullen.
The area was known at the time as the Carlow Stables, for in the days of the Horse drawn coaches, this was the place where horses were changed on the trip between Dublin and Carlow.
Kildare County Council built 42 houses, the first occupants taking residence in 1939. Today there are large number of residents whose parents and grandparents were the first key holders in the Estate.
On Friday August 22nd there will be an Anniversary Party on the Nicholastown Green to celebrate this milestone from 7pm. We will launch a 75th anniversary booklet and unveil a plaque to mark the occasion.
The residents' committee is issuing an open invitation to all Kilcullen residents and in particular people whose parents and grandparents may have lived in the Estate through the years, to come along and celebrate with a cup of tea, some food and a chat on the night.
On the following Friday evening 6.30-7.30 August 29th we are holding a Nature evening as part of heritage week. As part of Wild Green Project there will be a nature talk on the tree's of the Green and on composting.
