Big anniversary for Gerry
Gerry O'Donoghue, husband of our local Librarian Julie, a founding director of the Maintain Hope charity, and general all round nice guy, is celebrating a significant anniversary at the end of the month, writes Brian Byrne.
Nope, not his wedding or anything like that. But it will be 40 years since he first arrived in Kilcullen. A newly trained teacher, it was his first job when he joined the staff of the Boys School, and he worked in the Old School recently refurbished by Joey Fraser as part of the Hideout.
Through the years he has always been available to MC local events, even after leaving Kilcullen directly. He also trod the boards for Kilcullen Drama Group in his time. Gerry retired earlier this year as Principal of Scoil Bhride in Athgarvan. He has been devoting more of his time to the Maintain Hope work for the Shelter Childrens Home in Ngong, near Nairobi. He's just back from his most recent stint there, and is busy helping to drum up interest in the latest fundraiser for Maintain Hope's work, which is now heading towards its 10th year.
Next Sunday, 22 June, the Midsummer Melodies concert promises to be a splendid afternoon of entertainment by tenor Phillip Scott. A glass of wine by the Liffey, with a half promise of good weather to make it even more fun, and the songs of John McCormack and Percy French. The recital beginning at 3pm following a reception from 2.30pm.
Tickets are still available at Berney's Pharmacy 045 481497, €20. Not cheap, sure. But real quality. And for a quality cause that's showing real benefits of the support from Kilcullen and the surrounding mid-Kildare.
