Badminton update
A number of matches to report on this week in the Dublin District League, writes Enda O'Neill, PRO of Kilcullen Badminton Club, starting with Monday 3 February with KBC’s Mix 1 team captained by Paddy Burke playing away to Mount Pleasant. Paddy and the team continued their League success with another winning performance beating the home team 3-1.
There were two outings in the DDL the following night with Men 3 and Mix 2. Men 3 captained by Vincent Coller were defeated 3-1 in a tight match against Rathmore while the Mix 2 team captained by Dave Mc Clean were drew two all at home Boyne BC.
Wednesday the 5th saw Sean's Men's 2 team visit an in-form Lucan, it wasn’t to be KBC’s night and they were comprehensively beaten 4-0. This ends any hope of Men's 2 making a quarter final but they can still finish a respectable third in the group.
Dave's Mix 2 played their second DDL match on Thursday 6 February away to Pembroke and they improved on their home draw by beating Pembroke four matches to nil.
Anna Maries Ladies 2 team played a hard fought match at home against St. Judes on Friday 7th. The girls managed to get a well deserved 2-2 draw.
Friday the 7th also saw Mix 1 captained by Paddy Burke reach the Dublin District Cup Division 3 final against An Caislean Nua which was played at Ireland's Badminton HQ, Baldoyle. After swapping blows in the first two singles matches, Paddy and Gareth lost their mens doubles in a close and exciting match. An epic match was then played by KBCs two ladies, Norrie and Lynsey, which they managed to take in a thrilling 3-setter. This win left the tie at two all and meant it would go down to the last mix match. Norrie and Gareth took the first match but lost the second. The third set went to the wire but it went An Caislan's way in a brilliant 21-17. As our club captain Ronan Murphy said, "it’s the way a final should be played, won in the final game in the final set of the match."
A big congratulations has to go out to the team of Norrie Gilchrist, Lynsey Walshe, Gareth Hogan and captain Paddy Burke who did themselves and the club so proud, in reaching a Division 3 final. This is the highest level KBC have ever competed at. Also thanks to all the supporters who went to Baldoyle to cheer them on.
