Library membership now free

You can now join Kilcullen Library for free, following the implementation of an initiative first announced last year, writes Brian Byrne.

Membership fees have been scrapped throughout the Kildare Library Service, which has 15 branches and a mobile library.

In addition, there has been a substantial, and growing still, increase in the number of eBooks available for lending across the internet. Up to 10 books in all categories can be lent into members' devices at a time, for periods of up to 21 days. AudioBooks can also be downloaded. An app called OverDrive is available for tablets, through which registered Library members can also manage their loans from the 450,000 printed books available in the network.

Some 40,000 visitors a year attend libraries across the county, and Julie in Kilcullen has been reporting consistently increased footfall over the last number of years.
