Update on Badminton competitive progress
The KBC Mixed 1 team captained by Michelle O’Toole started their Dublin District Cup with an entralling first round match at home to Boyne BC of Meath on Tuesday the 29 October, writes Enda O'Neill, PRO of Kilcullen Badminton Club. The 3-hour match was absolutely fantastic for the spectator.
Kilcullen lost their first two Singles matches, with Kilcullen's Gareth Hogan losing to Boyne's Greg Farrell in the Mens 20-22 and 16-21. Norrie Gilchrist lost her Ladies Singles to Sarah Russell in two sets in another hard fought match.
Kilcullen redeemed itself in both the Mens and Ladies Doubles, with Paddy Burke and Gareth beating Boyne's Men 21-17, 21-17 in both sets. Michelle and Norrie beat the Boyne Ladies of Sarah Russell and Ann Towey 22-20 and 21-17.
This meant after four games KBC had won two and Boyne BC also had two games won, and the final game between Michelle and Paddy of KBC and Ann Towey and Gary Herbert of Boyne would decide the match. This turned out to be the game of the night.
In the first set KBC won in a tie break 25-23 helped by some superb serving from Michelle, the second set went to Byone 15-21. The third and deciding set was another tie break with KBC winning 22-20. Paddy showed his class with some fantastic attacking and defensive shots to aid in KBC’s win. Well done to the captain Michelle and her team of Norrie, Paddy and Gareth and good luck in the next round of the Cup.
Thursday 31 October also saw Ladies 1 captained by Caroline Sheedy beat Portarlinton 4-0 in their grade 2 SWL at home, so well done to Caroline, Aoife Trant, Lynsey Walsh and Michell O’Toole. This is a great win, along with two draws, one with Johnswell of Kilkenny and one with Gorteen of Tipperary that leaves them on top of the League.
Also well done to Paddy's Mens 1 Team who beat Kildare town away in their fourth SWL match, leaving them topping the table and definitely making the semi finals. Well done to Paddy, Gareth, Darren and sub Alistor Moody. Also a speedy recovery to Dave McClean who unfortunatly fractured a bone in his ankle on Saturday. Dave has now agreed to mentor the Mix 3 team while he is out of action, so from Mix 3, thanks to Dave.
