Badminton week in KBC
To celebrate Badmintion week — Monday 9 September to Sunday 15 September, KBC Junior and Senior clubs decided to run two sessions together on Saturday morning 14 September, writes Enda O'Neill.
The first session started at 10 o'clock with the U/13s and U/11s. We started with a coaching session from our resident coach Gareth Hogan, (with the help of the senior crew that were there) who worked on footwork, court position and the different types of shots. Then some games were had between the seniors and juniors, playing shuttle races (which nearly killed some of the senior members trying to keep up with the juniors!!) followed by the games, beat the pro on court 4 and New Zealand Doubles on courts 1,2 & 3. Great fun was had by all and it was great to see some new junior members there as well as some of lasts years’ troop.
The next session was held for the U/18s, this gives us a great insight into the years ahead for KBC, as you know we have inherited some great talent from the junior club over the last year with players like Darren Lee and Gareth Hogan progressing from Junior to senior level’s with great success.
The future is looking bright as the older juniors are a very talented lot and they proved this by giving some of us old guys the run around! As I said earlier the future is looking good for KBC with our junior club but this would not be possible without the junior committee of Trina Walsh, Fiona Wilmot, Nora Hogan, Ester Ready and coach Gareth Hogan. A big thanks is given to the above as they give up their time voluntarily and they provide a great service to the younger members of our club, also needless to say that volunteers are always needed so if there are any parents out there who can give a hand it is always welcome.
I would also like to thank the following senior players who gave up their Saturday to help out, so a massive thanks to Pat Dempsey, Olivier, Meave, Kendra and Colin Pauloin Valroy, Fintan Phelan, Sarah Walshe, Darren Lee, Clive Cole and Ronan Murphy (if I’ve forgotten anyone apologies!!)
Finally I would just like to congratulate Aoife Trant, one of our current senior members, who on Sunday won the All Ireland Junior Camogie championship beating Laois in their final, Congrats Aoife to you and all the Kildare team.
