DID YOU KNOW?

The word 'shoddy' was originally the name of a textile material, invented in 1813 in Yorkshire, where old woollen rags and waste were mixed with fresh wool to provide a cheaper product. Its transition to an adjective reflecting poor quality or scams and corruption came during the American Civil War, when British manufacturers exported massive amounts of shoddy to the US for uniforms, which infamously disintegrated in short order.
