More Kilcullen heritage pics arrive
Some more nostalgia and local people historyWe have some more heritage pictures to show today, courtesy of Jim Collins. They will be added to the web file on Kilcullen Gathering Heritage Collection.
The one above was taken in the Mill Yard in 1959 and shows Michael O'Connell, Noel McCabe, Joe Corrigan and Pauline Collins.
On the 'strand' behind the mill (note no 'island'), Jimmy Domican (Dum-Dum) and Jim Collins (Gilly) in 1950.
Pat McKenna winding in the hare at Mongrel Park (1960).
Pat and Tom Berney survey the damage after a CIE truck hit the pub in May 1961.
The raft on the Mill Pond, 1944. The raft which was constructed by Jim Collins Snr (The Miller). It was propelled by poles and used to ferry stones across the river to repair the weir. When not in use it was used for leisure trips up the river, those on board usually were non-swimmers.
On the raft in this photo is, 'Captain' Jim Collins, aged 6, in short trousers with his cousin from Aughrim St Dublin, Nancy O’Reilly nee Flanagan whose family owned The Hide-Out before 1925 (Editor's Note: It was then Flanagan's Motor Bar, and when my grandfather bought in 1924 it became Byrnes Hotel; my dad, Jim Byrne Jr and my mother Monica turned it into 'The Hideout' in 1950).
With Nancy were her two daughters, Bernie and Minnie. The tall girl in the middle is Geraldine Deegan who now lives in London. One of the two boys standing at the back of the cinema (barely visible) is Liam Deegan, aka 'The Waddler Deegan'. The lads are probably waiting for a 'go' on the raft. Jim Collins says the reason for the scaffolding on the bridge behind might be that the Army had installed explosives in the bridge so it could be blown up if the Germans invaded ... he says that was told to him by Joe Kelly, who lived in the square.
