Kilcullen back to Naas in electoral boundary revisions

Gilltown also back in Naas foldKilcullen will be moved back into the Naas electoral area for the next local elections, according to proposals in the Local Electoral Area Boundary report, writes Brian Byrne.

Gilltown and Ballymore will also be part of the Naas hinterland in the proposals, which will also see the total number of Kildare county councillors increase from 25 to 40, with the abolition of Town Councils in Naas, Newbridge and Athy.

The Naas Area will have nine councillors under the new arrangement.

Across the country, the changes mean that 918 councillors will be elected, a substantial drop from the 1,647 currently serving. On average, there will be a councillor for every 4,830 people.

In the last electoral shift, in 2008, Kilcullen was effectively divided in local representation, with most of the town being moved from the Naas area to the Athy Area, along with Gilltown and Ballymore. In that shuffle, Moanbane and Rogan Park estates, along with the right hand side of the town north of the river, including Logstown and Riverside Manor, remained part of Naas. In the subsequent 2009 Local Elections Martin Heydon was elected for FG in the Athy area. He later became a TD for Kildare South, and Ivan Keatley was selected to take his place on Kildare County Council.
