Chewing gum project for Kilcullen

Kilcullen is to become a participant in a national initiative to deal with the problem of chewing gum on the sidewalks, writes Brian Byrne.

Noel Clare told the recent meeting of Kilcullen Community Action that the Focus on Gum initiative is designed to raise awareness of the problem, especially involving local schools.

"What happens is a problem area will be cleared of gum residue, and monitored before and after by the schoolchildren to see what happens," he said.

The national initiative was developed following a deal with Wrigleys some time ago when a levy on gum was threatened by the Department of the Environment.
