Kilcullen 'should twin with NI town'

Kilcullen should twin with a similar town in Northern Ireland, the recent meeting of Kilcullen 2017 heard, writes Trish Whelan.

martinheydonheadThe idea was suggested by Martin Heydon TD, who said that twinning with a NI town would be more beneficial to the local community than twinning with a town abroad.

"The idea is to find a town with which we have particular similarities like sporting and cultural activities," he told the meeting of the implementation group for Kilcullen's community development plan. "It should be of a similar size to Kilcullen, and preferably with a river running through it, and with similar sporting, musical, drama and heritage groups."

This, he felt, could lead to all sorts of possibilities including various competitions and matches taking place between both towns, musical and drama performances, all resulting in people visiting each other and building communications.

He believed such a cross-border initiative could be particularly exciting for clubs and groups like the GAA, Drama and Canoe Clubs and would help break down barriers as 'there is still a huge ignorance about the North'.

"We could see real benefits for the town through a twinning like this," he said, adding that if the young people travel, their parents will follow. He felt such an initiative may not happen this year, but with plans in place could build up over time.

At present, Kilcullen has no 'twin' either at home or abroad.
