Farewell to Hook
There was a special ’Black Budgies’ performance on Sunday night in Bardons to mark the departure of one of the Flock of Budgies lead singers to Oz, writes Brian Byrne.
It was a packed evening for lots of other reasons, but a certain sadness was there too, because Mick ’Hook’ Kelly is taking the emigration plane on Thursday. As soon as he's settled, Jeanette and family will be following out.
"I'm sad to leave, but the big picture is my family," he says. "I need to try and provide some standard of life for them."
He’ll miss the Budgies playing the headline gig at Sunday’s Kilcullen River Festival. And last night Hook played his final game for Kilcullen GAA in the Junior quarter final against St Laurence's, leaving his mark with two points.
He’s going to Perth, currently the biggest-paying place for the Irish leaving home. We wish him well, and reckon there’s a chance for him to to start a Clutch of Kookaburras there.
Note: The 'Black Budgies' term was coined on Sunday night because the regulars in Flock of Budgies were joined by a number of other local musicians.
