Free glaucoma tests

Glaucoma is the name for a group of diseases which affects the eye’s ability to maintain its normal pressure, writes local optometrist Nichola Kennedy. This can lead to peripheral vision damage and eventually, if left untreated, blindness.

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in Ireland. One in ten people over 50 and one in 200 under 50 will be at risk of developing glaucoma in their lifetime. There are no symptoms to this disease—it is usually painless and by the time you notice something is wrong it can often be too late. Sometimes people with glaucoma notice that their vision has become less clear.

For World Sight Week members of the independent opticians group EyeZone will be offering a free glaucoma test at one of their 100-plus locations nationwide. It’s an easy, painless process, and involves talking to you about your family history and your own general health and eye history, checking what you can read on the testing chart, and measuring the pressure in your eyes.

This free glaucoma test is available by appointment at Nichola Kennedy Optometrist at 045-484643 for all of the month of March.
