Wall foundations today

Wall work

Foundations for the reconstruction of the CPC wall opposite the Garda Station are due to be poured today, writes Brian Byrne.

The stone wall section has been completely dismantled, following the discovery during the work that there were no foundations at all under the structure.

"It was just sitting there," says Albert Keenan, who is working on the project. "It was obviously built for a time when there was no heavy traffic and little vibration. But we can feel the vibrations from every passing vehicle now, and there was no point in just repairing the existing wall. It wouldn't have been a proper job."

A new concrete block 4' wall will be built and faced with the original stone. The original capping stones will be used to finish it.
