'No Kerdiffstown waste for Kilcullen' - FF deputy
No waste from Kerdiffstown will be moved to the KTK landfill site at Kilcullen, according to Deputy Sean O Fearghaill, writes Brian Byrne.
In a communication to the Diary, the Fianna Fail deputy says this fact has been 'confirmed' to him after correspondence with Kildare's County Manager Michael Malone and the Minister for the Environment Eamonn O Cuiv.
Deputy O Fearghaill had 'strenuously objected' to the proposal to move the material to Kilcullen. He also said he had 'very little confidence' in the Environmental Protection Agency, given its handling of the Kerdiffstown situation.
Michael Malone said 'no material had yet been moved' from Kerdiffstown, and any 'short term decision' to do so 'will be dictated by the safe management of the fire' there.
He also said the ultimate decicion for any waste movement rests with the EPA.
Minister O Cuiv said that any waste moved off the Kerdiffstown site is only to happen 'after it has been characterised and considered as non-hazardous'.
Strong objections have been raised in Kilcullen to the possibility of the material being brought to the KTK facility, especially by residents in the proximity of that site, which is currently in the process of being 'capped'.
A meeting of Kilcullen Community Action this morning considered the calling of a public meeting for early next week. Confirmation of any such meeting will come here on the Diary over the weekend.
