Kerdiffstown Kilcullen waste plan a 'contingency'

Plans under discussion to bring burned waste from Kerdiffstown to Kilcullen are at the moment a 'contingency', Kilcullen Community Action has been told by the EPA.

This follows a meeting this morning between EPA representatives and members of KCA.

"The idea is that the material would be quarantined on a hard stand at KTK, and not be put into landfill until it was clear that it was suitable under the KTK licence," says Noel Clare of KCA.

He also said that there was no question of all the Kerdiffstown material coming to Kilcullen, as there simply wouldn't be capacity for it. But KCA had been told that up to 10,000 tonnes could be involved in the Kilcullen plan, over a timescale of perhaps two weeks.

All testing and decisions are being made by the EPA, which is now managing the whole Kerdiffstown situation, following the closure of the original operating company. An underground fire has been raging there for two weeks.
