School journalists for a day
Fifth and 6th class students at Newbridge Educate Together school, which is attended by a number of Kilcullen pupils, recently became journalists for a day and created their own newspaper front page to take home.
The class learned about what makes the news, how to interview people, and how to write an article, from former journalist Hilary Makin, who is now Communications Manager with the medical research charity Fighting Blindness.
Students in each group became photographers, reporters, sub editors and editors as they pulled together headline news while working to a tight deadline.
Hilary Makin said the students asked really thoughtful questions during their interviews and produced high quality newspapers at the end of the session with some great headlines.
"It was a thoroughly enjoyable workshop. I'm sure there are some future journalists and press photographers amongst them."
Newbridge Educate Together National School is based in Rosetown, Athgarvan, and has over 170 pupils. For more information visit www.netns.ie.
