More food at Bardons

At the historic Bardons Pub, owner Eddie Cross is to extend the lunchtime food business he has been developing since the summer, until 8.30pm each evening.

In addition, food will also now be available on Saturdays, to cater for the shoppers in town to get their weekend provisions.

“It will be different from our lunch menu, but not into the heavy meals end of things,” says Eddie, who has owned the former hotel for five years and has invested significant funds in its refurbishment and development.

“We’re looking at options like Beef & Guinness Casserole, Steak Sandwich, Home-made Burgers, salads and snacks. I’m thinking of the commuters who get back into town around six or seven in the evening, and maybe want to go out for something inexpensive and unwind.”

With two full restaurants already in Kilcullen -- Fallon’s and Paul’s -- Eddie has no wish to go head to head in an area already well catered for.

“At the end of the the day, we’re a pub first. That’s what we have built up, and what will always be our priority.”

That said, the reaction to the lunch operation in Bardons has been very good, with appreciative customers coming in from local offices, other businesses, and teachers from the schools.

The chef at Bardons is Ellen O’Driscoll, originally from Cobh where she trained at the famous Trade Winds Restaurant. Up at this end of the country she has worked in The Thatch in Ballymore and Monread Lodge.
