Solving a traffic problem
An opportunity exists for dramatically easing some of the traffic difficulties in Kilcullen.
It will require brave decision and some significant cooperation to implement. And no doubt, the idea will attract some strong opposition.
Nobody can deny that one of the more difficult spots in town is the traffic lights junction at The Hideout.
Particularly on the Curragh Road part of the intersection, there simply isn't adequate width for enough lanes to clear traffic efficiently.
And some of the extraordinary and skillful manoeuvres by truck drivers making difficult turns at the intersection are wonderful to behold but scary at the same time.
Plans for a reconstruction of the wall of the former Cross & Passion Convent are currently under consideration by Kildare County Council.
And in the last issue of the Bridge, a well considered editorial suggested that the land around the facility currently owned by KARE, and the Cross & Passion College, might be developed overall as a public park.
Might this not be a good time to also consider taking a little of the land where the (unused) gate is, and rebuilding the junction?
The gate itself could be reconstructed in a new position, and so wouldn't be lost.
It would also be an opportunity to remove the very unsightly telegraph and lighting poles at the crossing. Placing the cables underground here would be a start to conducting a similar exercise through the town.
I'll leave it to the engineers to come up with the details. If anyone considers the idea at all.
